It seems that no parent had enrolled more children than Mr. Matthew Loo (盧晉鈞先生) in Wan Hua schools. Mr. Loo and his deceased wife sent their 4 girls to St. Emilies' Convent and their 3 boys to Catholic Anglo Chinese School to receive good education. All the 4 daughters - Philomena Khin Lay Win, Patricia Khin Lay May, Helen Khin Lay Kyu and Maria Khin Lay Myint - became physicians. When St. Emilies' Convent rebuilt after a big fire in 1957, Mr. Loo generously donated money to pay for the cost of building two new classrooms. Now, at age 96, Mr. Loo lives with his family in Australia and, with his active driver's license, he drives his own car to go places. Mr. Loo's nice collection of historical photographs allows us to see these never-seen-before pictures of our Wan Hua headmaster, nuns, teachers and our fellow alumni. Fifty nine years have passed since the Burmese military government senselessly seized our beloved Wan Hua boys' and girls' schools. We would like to thank Mr. Loo whole-heartedly for sharing the rare photographs with us. Our appreciation also goes to our fellow alumnus Seraphim Sue (Taipei, Taiwan) who discovered the pictures in his uncle Mr. Loo's photo albums during his recent visit to Australia. |
The large portrait of Mr. Matthew Loo (top center) was taken on his 81st birthday. The 4 smaller pictures of Mr. Loo on the left and right were taken at different times. Pictured in the lower section are Mr. Loo and his children and grandchildren. Father John Sue (middle, back row), Master Ting (right, middle row), Matthew Loo (left, 3rd row), seen in this wedding picture. Sister Dorothy (left), another nun, and a teacher with the class. Master and Mrs. Ting with their children Mrs. Ting (left), Mrs. Katherine Sue (middle), and unidentified persons. |
