Photograph contributed by James Chen of Taiwan
James Chen (Mar Laoh) was famous among Wan Hua boys for the outdoor experiment he carried out 50 years ago. One hot summer day, near the tall trees behind the school church, James squatted himself down, placed a small piece of paper over a pile of leaves on the ground, pulled out a magnifying glass out of his pocket and then held it at an oblique angle over the paper. The magnifying glass was in the path of the sun light. The sun light fell on the lens in the center of the glass giving off a lot of heat and light on the other side of the lens. In a moment, the paper started to burn. His experiment drew applause from those who were watching anxiously. No one remembers whether he was punished by Father John Sue or Master Ting for his brilliant experiment. James Chen lives with his wife in Sinchu, Taiwan.
