WHAA Raises $2,800
for Myanmar War Relief

The Wan Hua Alumni Association organized a special Myanmar relief fundraising campaign in May 2026, with Sr. Magdalene Lim leading the effort.

Responding to the ongoing civil conflict in Myanmar, the association rallied its members for a dedicated fundraising drive in May 2026. Under the leadership of Sr. Magdalene Lim, the campaign collected $2,800 to provide relief to those affected by the war.

This follows a long tradition of giving: in 2024, the association launched a second Myanmar war relief campaign, and in 2020 donated $12,120 to the Red Cross for COVID relief in China, as well as funds to Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition — the same order that once ran St. Emilie's Convent.

Our Mission

Networking, remembrance, and giving back.

Our goal is (1) to provide networking opportunities among Wan Hua alumni worldwide and (2) to provide assistance to Wan Hua nuns and retired teachers who remain in Burma.

The Wan Hua Alumni Association was formed at a potluck party attended by former students of the Catholic Anglo Chinese School and St. Emilie's Convent, at Scanlan Hall, St. Thomas More Church, 1300 Junipero Serra Blvd., San Francisco, on October 29, 2005.

Felix Chin and Stan Liou were nominated President and Vice-President respectively.

The School

Catholic Anglo Chinese School, Rangoon.

In 1915, Rev. Father Germain Allard established the Chinese Mission Schools for Girls and Boys on Kili Street, Rangoon — a school that would educate generations of Chinese-Burmese students over the following decades.

A separate girls' school, St. Emilie's Convent, was established in 1954 under Sister Dorothy Kiely. Together these two institutions formed the heart of a community that carried its spirit across the world.

Dr. Steven Aung

Dr. Steven Aung

Dr. Steven Aung (王超群校友), known as Ong Chow Kun when he attended Catholic Anglo Chinese School, won the Dr. Rogers Prize Groundbreaker Award for Excellence in Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He was also inducted into the Order of Canada in 2006.

Dr. Lawrence Wu

Dr. Lawrence Wu

Lawrence M.H.M. Wu, M.D., of Edgerton, Ohio, attended Catholic Anglo Chinese School and became a general surgeon. He and his brother Morris were adopted sons of Father Danis. Dr. Wu passed away on May 31, 2006, aged 69.
