Wan Hua Alumni Association

Mission Statement

Our goal is (1) to provide networking opportunities among Wan Hua alumni worldwide and (2) to provide assistance to Wan Hua nuns and retired teachers who remain in Burma.

How We Came Together

The Wan Hua Alumni Association was formed at a potluck party attended by former students of the Catholic Anglo Chinese School and St. Emilie's Convent. The event took place at Scanlan Hall, St. Thomas More Church, 1300 Junipero Serra Blvd., San Francisco, California on October 29, 2005. Felix Chin and Stan Liou were nominated President and Vice-President respectively.

Our Name

At the February 11, 2007 meeting, four names were proposed for the association:

  • Burma Wan Hua Alumni Association of Northern California
  • Burma Wan Hua Alumni Association of Bay Area
  • Burma Overseas Chinese Wan Hua Alumni Association of Northern California
  • Burma Overseas Chinese Wan Hua Alumni Association of Bay Area

Attendees unanimously voted for option 1 — "Burma Wan Hua Alumni Association of Northern California." At a later meeting it was decided to delete "Northern California" from the association letterhead and banners.

Membership

The association admits former students of Government High School Ahlone No. 6 (formerly Catholic Anglo Chinese School) and Government High School Ahlone No. 3 (formerly St. Emilie's Convent) as members. The association also encourages spouses and children of members to participate in activities.

Joe Chow was honored as a Wan Hua alumnus with full membership rights for his volunteering since the association's establishment in 2005.

Support for Burma

One of the association's original purposes was to support Wan Hua nuns and retired teachers who remain in Burma. Early meetings established a Retired Teachers and Nuns Fund, and Francis Ting was designated to take charge of coordinating the delivery of funds. In January 2007, Francis Ting and Henry Lim requested a friend traveling to Burma deliver $200 to the nuns.

Governance

Officer positions have one-year terms, with a limit of two consecutive terms unless the membership votes otherwise by a two-thirds majority. Officers must obtain board approval for purchases exceeding $200. Members can remove an officer by simple majority vote if they seriously violate association rules.

The association maintains a website and uses email to distribute meeting minutes to Honorary Presidents, Directors, Officers, and Attendees. Meetings are held every other month, with the President able to call special meetings at discretion.
