In Memory of Song Pu Lim (U Soe Myint)

1941 – November 2024
Song Pu Lim

We were deeply saddened by the passing of our alumnus and friend Song Pu Lim (U Soe Myint). He was born in 1941 and passed away in November 2024. He and his parents and siblings have roots in Taik Kyi Township of Yangon Region.

Song Pu had a towering figure. He and his younger sisters attended Wan Hua schools. The family owned and operated San Pya Cinema, located at the corner of Phone Gyi Street and Anawrahta Road. Song Pu, who graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Rangoon Arts and Sciences University, worked as an accountant for the theatre. Like other privately-owned businesses, it was seized by General Ne Win's military government in 1964.

Song Pu and his wife and their children were long-time residents of the San Francisco Bay Area. Song Pu worked for the San Francisco Municipal Railway before his retirement. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

In Memory of Jean Chow King (周婉君校友)

March 28, 1944 – May 29, 2024

We were deeply saddened by the passing of our alumna Jean Chow King. She was born on March 28, 1944 and passed away on May 29, 2024 in Southern California. Both pharmacists, she and her husband together owned and operated a pharmacy before they retired.

Her classmates at Wan Hua remember Jean as an A student in their class. A Lashio native, she was a boarder at St. Emilie's Convent. She was well-loved by the SJA Sisters that ran the Convent. An avid reader, she particularly liked to read Chinese martial arts novels. She was well-versed in both Chinese and English. She had compassion for people who are not doing well in their lives. For the past few years, she had donated generously to the poor and needy people in Burma through our fundraising campaigns. While she was fighting the disease that eventually took her life, she shared her concern with her friends about those suffering in the deadly civil war back home.

Passed away June 6, 2024, Vallejo, California

It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Ko Aung Myint (許信發校友). He passed away in his home in Vallejo, California on June 6, 2024.

In Memory of Aung Kyaw

Passed away peacefully October 6, 2020 · Taiwan

We mourn the passing of fellow alumnus Aung Kyaw, who passed away peacefully in Taiwan on October 6, 2020. He is remembered fondly by his Wan Hua classmates.

At Catholic Anglo Chinese School in Rangoon, Aung Kyaw was instrumental in organizing the school's basketball team — a sport that bound generations of CACS students together. After immigrating, he settled in Morocco and built a life there, operating the "Golden China" restaurant in Casablanca, where he became a beloved figure in that community.

He is survived by his family and by the many classmates and friends who remember his warmth, his love of basketball, and his entrepreneurial spirit that carried the spirit of Wan Hua across the world.

In Memory of Pein Kee Liu (a) 劉炳基

Passed away September 5, 2021
Pein Kee Liu (劉炳基校友)

The Wan Hua Alumni Association announces with great sorrow the passing of our alumnus Pein Kee Liu (Pin Si) on Sunday, September 5, 2021. The injury he sustained in a fall from his bed took his life. A funeral service will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 19 at Cypress Lawn, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, California.

Pein Kee Liu (Pin Si) and his late brother Pin Kai were boarders at CACS. Pin Si, a very athletic student, played both basketball and soccer in school. He came to the U.S. in 1971. He married a former doctor Angela Paw (St. Emilie's Convent) in Hong Kong in 1977. Together they have a daughter Alexandria.

Around 1991, he joined the San Francisco Municipal Railway, which is the seventh largest public transit system in the United States. It is a large city department with a fleet of about 1,000 vehicles that consist of diesel buses, cable cars and light rail vehicles (LRV). Pin Si, a good mechanic, was patient and thorough when diagnosing and repairing a car or a light rail vehicle. He moved up through the ranks to become a superintendent in the mechanical division of the department. As a superintendent, he was powerful with the authority to procure machinery or services worth tens of thousands of dollars. Pin Si was friendly to everyone, but would stand up to anyone to fight for his principles, even at the cost of making enemies within the department. During his 30-year service there, he helped his co-workers from Burma get promoted in their jobs and protected them when they were bullied by their supervisors.

Pin Si invested in real estate to make his money grow for his family. He generously and anonymously donated a large sum of money to coronavirus victims in China through WHAA when news of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak first hit the world in March 2020.

May Pin Si rest in peace!

Below are the condolences from alumni near and far.

Thanks for the notification. It sure is sad and so sudden. We don't have his family's contact information. Please send condolences to his family and relatives on our behalf. Stay safe and best regards,
— Kenneth Law

So sad to hear about the passing of one of my best childhood friend Pin See. A shy & handsome athletic chap, a very good soccer player. I still remember going for a joy ride on his classic Land Rover. The wife Dr. Angela Paw was my classmate in MC1. I met both of them in SF many years ago after LA 68 class re-union. They both are very private and preferred isolation. I had lost touch with them as they do not believe in emailing. Please pass my condolence to Angela and the family.
— Vicky & Tony O. Myo-Lwin, M.D.

I'm sorry to learn that Pin See passed away. I remember him. Please extend my heartfelt condolences to his family. It is always sad to see people we know pass away, but life is truly impermanent. We have to wish him a smooth transition to his next life.
— Steven Aung (M.D.)

In Memory of Martha Lu and Her Elder Brother Kar Site Lu (盧嘉彩)

Martha Lu (2nd from left) and her brother Kar Site Lu (3rd from right) with family outside St. Theresa's Church, mid-2019

Martha Lu and her elder brother Kar Site Lu (盧嘉彩) died of Covid-19 on July 22, 2021 and August 3, 2021, respectively, in their own homes in Yangon due to a lack of hospital care and shortage of oxygen supply.

Martha, whose family came from a small town of Kyonmange near the Irrawaddy River, had attended St. Emilie's Convent as a boarder. She was 77 at the time of her death. She was a successful businesswoman before Covid took her life. When property values started to rise in Yangon, Martha struck a deal with a landowner, demolished the existing building on the lot, and in its place built a new 7-story residential building.

Kar Site was 81 but healthy when he passed away. He could have lived for many more years were it not for Covid-19. In his senior years at Catholic Anglo-Chinese School, Kar Site was one of a few monitors assigned to discipline boarders. As he enforced/maintained law and order with the power of a cane, he was much feared by the kids. Before he retired, Kar Site was a businessman operating a wholesale fish business.

The 2nd person (left column) from the back of the classroom was Kar Site Lu

Condolences from alumni:

Very sad to hear the passing of Lu Kar Site and his sister Martha because of COVID-19. I could not help recalling his lovely and humorous CACS stage performances in my CACS years. He was a bit senior to me at CACS but thanks to his friendliness, we made good friends and got to know each other well in the basketball grounds. May Lu Kar Site & his sister Martha Rest peacefully in God.
— Arthur Wong

Thanks for sharing and sorry to hear the passing of Lu Kar Site. I do know him very well in boarding school of CACS. A good soccer player along with နှာခေါင်းပဲ့ (Mr hare-lip, sorry for not knowing his real name) and Pin Si. Kar Site used to hang around with စိန်ဂဒိုန်း Sein Gadone (Diamond head) of Heinzada. I do not know of Kar Site's sister. My condolence to the family. I would not recognise him based on the recent picture. I do recall him as a youngster who is senior to us. Kar Site was a monitor along with the two brothers Yu Chung and Ah Maung under Saya Yang Ming in boarding school.
— Tony O. Myo-Lwin, M.D.

So sad to hear about the passing of our Wan Hua alumni, Martha Lu and her brother, Kar Site Lu. Martha was a boarder the same time as my sister and I sixty some years ago. It was an untimely death for them. May both Rest In Peace.

In Memory of Joe Chow

Passed away June 29, San Mateo, California · Adviser to the Wan Hua Alumni Association
Joe Chow

Dear Wan Hua Alumni,

It is with great sorrow that I announce the untimely demise of our beloved friend Joe Chow. He passed away peacefully in San Mateo, California on Saturday, June 29 at 6:00 a.m. He was survived by his wife Jean Chow (a graduate of St. Emilie's Convent) and their two children.

Joe had honorably served as an adviser to Wan Hua Alumni Association since its formation 14 years ago. Although Joe was not a Wan Hua graduate, he had done so much for the association. Along with his dear wife Jean and many other Wan Hua graduates, Joe actively and enthusiastically helped organize many important activities of the association. Those activities included, among others, Chinese New Year banquets, picnics, day trips, and meetings.

Joe was a friend to everyone he met and a source of strength for all who knew him. Joe will be forever remembered by us!

According to Joe's wishes, there will be a private funeral service just for his closest family members. However, a memorial service, which will be open to all his friends and relatives, will be held on the 49th day of his passing. Stay tuned for an announcement on the memorial service!

May Joe Chow rest in peace!

Eulogy given by President Nora Kay at Late Joe Chow's memorial service

Good afternoon friends and guests,

Today we are gathered here to share fond memories of Joe Chow who passed away 49 days ago. I am saddened because we have lost a good friend who was an important part of our lives. But we are happy to celebrate his life and the times he shared so generously with his family and friends. I first met Jean and Joe 15 years ago at a wedding where we were seated at the same table. Even though Jean was Wan Hua alumnae, I did not know her since we attended the school at different times. My first impression of them was that they were a very handsomely matched couple — vibrant, graceful and stylish. As you all know, Joe looked much younger than his age. He was an avid health conscious person who was disciplined with his diet and exercise regimen. He was able to live vigorously and at full capacity until he was struck with the disease that unfortunately took his life. He was a true gentleman who faced his devastating illness with peace and courage. Though Joe was not Wan Hua alumnus, he helped out tremendously in all Wan Hua activities. His dedication to our association has won many commendations from our Wan Hua members. Joe was a very cheerful and positive person. He lit up the crowd with his jokes and often interjected witty remarks. He was the type of person who always acknowledged your emails with a reply with his idea or a humorous comment.

Such a good friend is hard to come by. We will miss him forever. And now I would like to present Jean a gift of appreciation on behalf of Wan Hua Alumni Association. Also another gift from a group of alumni.

Remembering Dr. Lawrence Wu

May 12, 1937 – May 31, 2006
Dr. Lawrence Wu

When the socialist government of General Ne Win nationalized privately-owned businesses in Burma in 1964, Dr. Lawrence Wu abandoned his private medical practice and came to the U.S. He became a surgeon and led a busy life. There was a lack of contact between him and his classmates from Wanhua. For half a century, his whereabouts had been a mystery to many people. This aroused the interest of his fellow alumnus, Dr. Tony Myo-Lwin (aka) Ong Chow Wan. Dr. Myo-Lwin consulted all sources of information to find him, but sadly found out that Dr. Wu had met an untimely demise. Dr. Lawrence Wu and his brother Morris Wu were adopted sons of Father Danis.

Lawrence M.H.M. Wu, M.D., age 69, of Edgerton, Ohio, died at 9:03 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2006. Dr. Wu was an attending physician and general surgeon at Community Memorial Hospital in Hicksville, Ohio, and Boerger Clinic in Edgerton, Ohio, from 1974 until his retirement in December of 2005.

His educational career began at Sacred Heart High School and the Catholic Anglo Chinese School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Rangoon in Burma in 1956 and from the Medical School of Rangoon in 1961. He had a private medical practice in Burma from 1961–63. Dr. Wu then did a surgical internship at Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City in 1964–65 and then did his surgical residency at Knickerbocker Hospital from 1966–1969. He did his emergency medicine residency at St. Mary's Hospital in New York City from 1969–1971.

He held memberships in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the American College of International Physicians (ACIP), the American Medical Association and the Ohio State Medical Association. He was inducted into Oxford's Who's Who and The Elite Registry of Extraordinary Professionals in 1993, the Who's Who National Registry in 1997–98, the Marquis Who's Who in America in 1998–99, and received a life membership in the American College of Emergency Physicians in 1997. He also served on the Board of Trustees for Community Memorial Hospital from 1996–2005.

Lawrence M.H.M. Wu was born on May 12, 1937, the son of John and Maria (Wong) Wu. He married Margaret Perez on May 29, 1968, in New York City, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Dr. Wu is survived by one daughter, Wendy L. Wu, of Toledo, Ohio.
