This was the first time WHAA held a meeting on Zoom.com. Meeting hosted by Nora Kay, 2:00–4:45 p.m.

  • On February 19, 2020, WHAA donated $12,120 to the Red Cross Society of China through the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco to help fight the spread of coronavirus in Wuhan. In return, the Chinese Consulate gave WHAA 2,000 masks, 1,000 gloves, and 6 forehead infrared thermometers on May 22, 2020. The meeting voted on distribution (7 Yes, 5 No, 7 Abstained on gloves). Each donor received 50 masks and 25 gloves. VIPs (Felix Chin, Saya Johnny Hsiung, Henry Te, Shan Khin, Kim Yin Chew, Peter Young) received 50 masks and 25 gloves each. One thermometer each went to Teacher 定光雪老師, Ko Kyaw Myint (David Pang), Pin Tse Liu, Nora Kay, Thomas Young, and Raymond Kong (Australia).
  • WHAA donated $500 to orphans under the care of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition (SJA) — the same organization that managed St. Emilie's Convent until it was nationalized. Nora Kay, Shan Khin, Seraphim, and Henry Lim collectively donated an additional $900 to SJA for food supplies for refugees and jobless families.
  • Most attendees agreed WHAA should hold more Zoom chit-chat sessions in the future.

Regular Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2006.

  • Chairman Stan, in his opening remark, requested all attending Officers to set an example by donating cash to the Association in any amount. He announced that Peter Wong from New York had donated $50.00 the night before. He encouraged all members to show their enthusiasm in supporting this donation drive.
  • Concerning the cash donation to the nuns/teachers in Burma, Chairman Stan requested Francis Ting to take charge of it. A total amount of $200.00 in cash was handed over to Francis Ting by Chairman Stan.
  • Election of eleven to thirteen members to the Board of Directors was deemed a good proposal. Twelve members had been selected, with one remaining empty seat to be added, making the final number of Directors 13. Joseph Lye is to retain his position.
  • The Chairman proposed that Ken Yup be appointed Honorary President because of his generous cash contribution; all members agreed unanimously. Joe Chow, who had participated voluntarily in all activities since the Association was established in 2005, was honored to be a Wan Hua alumnus with full membership rights.
  • After discussion, it was decided to delete the "Northern California" heading from the Association's letterhead and banners.
  • A suggestion was made and adopted to add Chinese names to the Alumni List, making it easier to identify schoolmates better known by their Chinese names.
  • James Huang suggested that communication with alumni during holiday seasons should be by U.S. mail; Henry Lim raised the cost of postage. The Chairman said it is better to make use of phone and website for dissemination of information.
  • The upcoming Lunar New Year dinner party has been scheduled for April 15, 2007. For the time being 15 tables are booked at the restaurant in South San Francisco. The price of a ticket will be $30.00. Joe Chow and Stan will go to the restaurant for further arrangements.

September 3, 2006 Scanlan Hall, St. Thomas More Church, San Francisco

Regular Meeting

Meeting held 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2006. Our thanks go to the alumni who brought in food: Felix Chin (yellow sticky rice, tasty steamed beans and coconut flakes), Steven Kong (a boxful of pork and sweet cheese buns), Stan and Lulu Liou (an apple pie), and Joe and Jean Chow (cookies).

Joe and Jean Chow reported that the rent for the picnic site, food, and other expenses incurred in holding the Wan Hua Family Picnic exceeded income from ticket sales by $144.14; this shortfall will be picked up by the Wan Hua Alumni Association.

  • Steven Kong said too much time is spent discussing the nuns and their orphanage, and we should concentrate on making the Association a better organization. Stan Liou said our original mission is to help the retired teachers and nuns, not to finance their projects. The attendees agreed to send the nuns $100 a month until the Fund is exhausted. As of 9/9/2006 the Retired Teachers and Nuns Fund has a total of $480.00. Francis Ting said there are no surviving retired teachers in Burma, so all available charity can go to the nuns.
  • Steven Kong (newly-elected President of Veng Cheng Hakka Association in San Francisco) said whoever is elected next President should be given a free hand to choose his own team of Officers.
  • A debate was held on whether to do away with annual membership dues of $20 per member and rely on donations at events. Henry Lim argued that depending totally on donations puts the Association at the mercy of donors, and that our Association is unique in using both methods — collecting membership dues as well as accepting donations.
  • Regarding the proposed trip to Las Vegas, Steven Kong will ask George Young, President of Nan Zhong Alumni Association, for the tour bus company's phone number. Stan Liou volunteered to contact the company for quotations. Jean Chow suggested the company picked must have a good safety record and a backup bus. Alfred Chin suggested announcing the tour on the website and in local Chinese-language newspapers; Henry Lim will write the Chinese-language announcement.
  • Stan Liou said there is not enough time to hold a separate students reunion dinner; instead it will be combined with the annual Chinese New Year banquet as the "Chinese New Year and Students Reunion Dinner," held on a Sunday toward the end of February 2007.
  • The annual election of President will be held in November. Steven Kong suggested getting a rubber stamp for the Association.
  • In response to a complaint about the website member list, Kang Sun Chou of Macau suggested creating two separate lists — a "Member List" (alumni who have paid dues) and an "Alumni List" (all alumni who provided contact information).

  • With his own money, Felix Chin bought steamed chicken buns, spongy rice cakes, and cookies and brought them to the meeting. Our thanks go to him for his kindness and generosity.
  • Felix Chin praised all volunteers for the success of the picnic. Stan attributed the success to the group effort put in by all the volunteers.

  • Francis Ting reported that Joseph Vong, a CACS alum, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2006 in Santa Clara due to kidney failure. Joseph was a little over 60. Each attendee chipped in $10 to buy flowers for Joseph's funeral; a sum of $90 was collected and handed to Felix Chin.
